SAMSUNG’S INNOVATIVE SMARTPHONE...

Samsung, the company that ships the third most phones worldwide behind Nokia and Sony Erricson, have released the full information for its hotly anticipated new smartphone.

The Samsung i8510 INNOV8 obliterates everything currently out in Europe in terms of multimedia features and connectivity. Innovative it most certainly is, featuring an 8 megapixel auto focus camera, the phones most impressive attribute. The camera-phone or phone-camera as it may perhaps be comes with a number of advanced features uncommon in most phones currently on the market, such as face-recognition, smile and blink recognition, and geotagging. Geotagging, by the way, is the ability to add information or pictures taken at a location and reference others taken at a location.

The camera can also take video at VGA resolution (that’s 640*480) that initially isn’t impressive but video is recorded at a rate of 30fps - rare for a phone. The phone also boasts the ability to record in slow motion, taking video in QVGA (that’s a quarter VGA, 320*240) resolution at 120fps, unheard of for a phone. Just like Apples revolutionary iPhone the INNOV8’ screen can be rotated via the means of an accelerometer, benefiting those who want to take photographs. The phone has a microSD card slot should you ever fill the 8GB or 16GB memory that comes as standard, or wish to move data quickly from phone to device etc. The phone should also be muli-application friendly due to the 128MB of built in RAM and also features all the types of connectivity one would expect of a smartphone today.

Aesthetically the large and bulky phone leaves quite a lot to be desired but it isn’t a necessity this phone appears fashionable. The Samsung i8510 INNOV8 hits the European market end of third quarter.

THREE NEW SONY WALKMANS...

In celebration of its third birthday since SONY ERICSSON launched a Walkman, a new Walkman for each year has been announced. The three new phones, the sliding W595 and two candy-bar phones, the W302 and W902, have been announced in conjunction with new wireless speakers, three new types of headphones and a new official case for the phones.

The feature intensive W902 includes an accelerometer for its 5 megapixel autofocus camera with an LED flash that will allow the screen to rotate, and dedicated keys for playing music. The QVGA (240 x 320) screen is a disappointment, considering the otherwise abundance of features found on the W902, for an otherwise middle to high-end phone in the Walkman range. The sleek looking SONY ERICSSON phone also comes with an 8GB M2 memory card in the package to supplement the 25MB onboard.

The W595 phone has a 3 megapixel camera but lacks autofocus, found in the W902. It also features all the expected components of a phone today, such as Bluetooth, the ability to connect to USB ports, FM radio and 3G connectivity and comes in a host of hues such as Active Blue or Lava Black.

The most affordable phone announced, the W302, offers a low-resolution screen (176 x 220) and comes in only 2 colours, Sparkling White and Midnight Black. Benefiting from a simple base of features the phone is very light, weighing only 78g and small in size.

All the phones announced will be released on to the market in the fourth quarter of 2008.
